It all started with a hall – one at an impressive height of 9.6 metres and with an extensive shop floor covering around 3,000 square metres over two main levels. These were the conditions met by Wanzl Metallwarenfabrik GmbH when Schmidts Märkte GmbH entrusted its Shop Solutions division to come up with a concept, take over project planning and design and install the family-run business’s 13th store. On 24 January 2018, a 3,000 m² shoppers’ paradise finally opened its doors: Edeka Schmidts Markt supermarket in Bad Säckingen, southwest Germany.
Wanzl Shop Solutions implemented a contemporary leitmotif: industry chic with a market hall look meets familiarity, regionality and quality. Bernd Kast from Wanzel, Head of Planning and Head of Design for the project says, “The main challenges were without a doubt the unusual height and mezzanine levels looking out over the sales area. It meant that we had to think and design in three dimensions and from multiple perspectives, always bearing in mind that people would ultimately be able to view the space from below, in the middle and even from above. It was therefore essential that, for example, orientation guides were retained but were also not designed in a way that would obstruct shoppers’ vision. The conditions created the challenge for the room to have structure and yet at the same time be something that can be experienced in its entirety. My personal highlight is exactly that: experiencing the space as a whole, with all of its incredibly diverse perspectives and levels. The effect of the various staging areas, and the lovingly created overall design come together to create a look that can only be called ‘Schmidts Bad Säckingen Style’ – a look that would be rather tricky to replicate due to the complexity of the space and design.”The store showcases around 35,000 items to impressive effect. The overall concept bears the signature of Wanzl’s designers right down to the last detail – from the shelving systems and orientation guides to the lettering on the glass panels and the design of adjacent doors, to staff areas. Cutting-edge graffiti elements also complement the store’s unique character. All in all, this creates an extraordinary and, above all, unique branding for the Edeka Schmidts store.
The store is also equipped with Wanzl’s understated PURETECH® product presentation system, offering a unique solution complementing the motif. Featuring innovative gondola heads, the system is used to put the spotlight on various products, including the impressive wine selection. Premièred at EuroShop 2017 and presented with the German Design Award 2018, PURETECH® allows plenty of scope for individual product displays. Whether it’s a clip-on spotlight adding accented light, a trendy letter board for product information or the option to label products laterally, all of these carefully developed, modern touches help encourage customers to enjoy making purchases. The fruit and veg department is equipped with VITABLE® to create the fresh feeling of an outdoor market. The design here is an expert mixture of nostalgic market stalls and an exciting, bustling wholesaler's store. A further palpable highlight is the cheese tower, where the delicacies pile up at several levels. Wanzl's extensive standard product range was expanded to include special components to create additional elements. For instance, a welcoming lounge on the gallery gives customers a glimpse into Schmidts’ glass-fronted, in-house kitchen. In the cosy ambience of the lounge, customers can watch as delicious food is freshly prepared. This transforms a shopping trip into a culinary experience, giving visitors the chance to take some time out from the chaos of day-to-day life.
